Basic Shapes - Formas Basicas

This is a lesson with activities to use for teaching the basic shapes in English and Spanish.  I've used the following resources and materials below to teach my children. Enjoy!

1. Ask what shapes they know?
    Que formas conoces?

2. Watch video on YouTube to learn the names of the basic shapes.
Mirar video en YouTube con las 4 formas basicas.

Sing the song together a few times and encourage the children to say the names of the shapes.

3. Find shapes at home.
    Encontrar formas en el hogar.

This is a good time to have the children work with a partner (or sibling) and make use of the target language.

4. Extension Activities for Pre-K and Kindergarten:

Pre-K or Preschool:

Paint and Stamp with Shapes

Kindergarten:       See Post here

Additionally, I use Melissa and Doug's Shape puzzles that also teaches about patterns. The pieces are made of wood so they are sturdy, fit well on small hands, colorful, and can be used to design their own pictures as well.   (affiliate link)

Trust you have found this post resourceful. Let me know in the comments how you teach the shapes and how you have done it bilingually.

Learning the Shapes in Kindergarten

Recently, I wrote a post of teaching the basic shapes to Preschoolers or Pre-K.  I decided to include what I did with my kindergartener on a separate post since I want to include the pictures to show you what we did.

The main song we are using for learning the basic shapes is from YouTube, called Cancion de las Figuras - Formas y Figuras.

So I wrote the list of the shapes in the same order they were presented in the video. We have been learning ordinal numbers so this was a good opportunity to use: primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto AND first, second, third, and fourth.

This was a great to practice to:

  • writing new words in two different languages.
  • drawing the shapes
  • drawing an object with the shape
  • saying the names of the shapes in English and Spanish

The joy of laminating at home

I used to pile up several projects before making a trip to Staples or Office Depot to laminate my projects. Other times, I had decided to just skip the laminating and do with the paper as it was.

Now, though, I have a new tool! My very own Scotch laminator, which is a real gem to all of us homeschooling moms.  Amazon (from what I've seen) has them on sale at the beginning of the school year.

This machine is so easy to use, let it heat up, and insert your laminating sheet in the feeding tray. Super easy and quick.  I used mine right away without any trouble.

My very first project was to laminate a whole set of sight words.

Here's the completed work:

If you wish to get a laminator and the pouches containing the laminating sheets, you can go to Amazon to find them:  (contains affiliate link)

Have fun laminating your projects!
